My Story

On Sunday, 12 May, mum, Neil and I took on Walk the Wight (26.5 miles) to support patients and families cared for by Mountbatten.

After battling with acute myeloid Leukaemia for 12 years, my dad's symptoms became rapidly worse in 2024 and he was moved to Mountbatten hospice. The care dad received was second to none, the doctors, nurses, medical, support staff and volunteers are dedicated, dilligent and sensitive to the individual needs of each patient.

I cannot express how pivotal and transformative our experience at Mountbatten has been. They supported us with the realisation and subsequent journey in accepting that death is a part of life, and that, no matter how hard it is to see the decline of a loved one, we can find strength in a community dedicated to living and dying well. The hospice will forever be a part of our lives and we look forward to supporting their essential efforts far into the future.

Thank you,

Sarah

Mountbatten info - (the Gov has recently cut the state contribution to this charity):

Please sponsor me to help provide 24/7 expert care and support for free to thousands of local people across the Island in their homes, the hospice building in Newport and St Mary's Hospital.

Your generosity will also give free bereavement and psychological support to anyone who needs it and help those with life-limiting conditions to live well during the last years of their life by providing rehabilitation and enablement services, art and music therapy, and a social programme.

It costs £10.5 million every year to run Mountbatten's services. Only a third of this money comes from the NHS - the rest comes from people like you and me.

Every pound you pledge means more Islanders will face death, dying, and bereavement with Mountbatten by their side. Thank you.
